Katie Bullard, Vice President of Product Management and Marketing at Mitratech, shared her thoughts on what it takes to be a successful general counsel in a Thought Leadership Spotlight Presented by Mitratech at the 2014 Chief Legal Officer Forum in San Francisco on April 29. In her presentation, “General Counsel: The Global Corporation’s Next Agent of Change,” Bullard noted change is an ongoing challenge for legal departments.
According to Bullard, many legal departments are asked to be a key business partner. In addition, Bullard said a legal department can help an organization gain a competitive edge over its rivals: “We’re being asked to collaborate more with our internal departments, to not always be the no team, but actually to help create more of a competitive advantage within our organization by streamlining processes, being more collaborative and being a better overall business partner with groups like the HR department.”
Bullard also pointed out many legal departments face global pressures. As legal departments search for ways to become more productive and efficient, Bullard said, they must become more strategic as well: “We’re also being asked as a legal department to be more strategic, to be more proactive, to actually predict risk as opposed to simply reacting as issues come in. I think the example of talent management is a great example of how we’re really being asked to be more strategic in the way that we think about the legal department.”
