Cynthia Stoddard, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at NetApp, discussed what it takes for an organization to optimize its cloud usage during a Thought Leadership Spotlight Presented by NetApp at the 2015 Chief Information Officer Leadership Forum in Chicago on June 17. In her presentation, “The Hybrid Cloud Journey,” Stoddard pointed out that the cloud is transforming IT, and organizations need to be flexible to ensure they can make the most of their cloud usage.
According to Stoddard, hybrid cloud resolves problems across an organization. Hybrid cloud delivers a tremendous amount of agility and flexibility, Stoddard said, which makes it incredibly valuable to organizations of all sizes. However, Stoddard noted that organizations must consider many factors to fully leverage hybrid cloud solutions: “In order to embrace the cloud, one of the things that we really have to think about is not just the technology, because the technology is a piece, but we have to think about the tools, the techniques and then the mindset of the organization. I would say that those are really, really critical components to making the change into this hybrid IT model.”
An organization that considers its workloads is more likely to optimize its cloud usage, Stoddard said. If an organization understands the cloud, it can find the right solutions to improve its IT, Stoddard noted: “I think in every organization, if you incorporate in shadow IT and other things, you do have a bit of cloud in every organization. Now, cloud is more than just having a set of applications on premise and then a set of applications in the cloud and saying we’re going to use this for this type of workload and this for this type of application over here. It’s really about operating differently.”
