Datapipe Chief Technology Officer John Landy discussed today’s IT challenges and how IT professionals can handle such issues during a Thought Leadership Spotlight Presented by Datapipe at the 2015 Chief Information Officer Leadership Forum in Dallas on March 11. In his presentation, Landy noted that IT professionals’ skills are changing, especially as new technologies become available, and organizations must be flexible to understand and manage today’s IT challenges.
According to Landy, planning is key for IT professionals. Today’s IT professionals must understand the cloud, Landy said, so that they can optimize it. In addition, Landy noted that creating flexible cloud environments becomes an option only if IT professionals understand how they are built: “The current state assessment on understanding our environment is a pretty in-depth process which involves discovery on very complex IT infrastructures that we know we have documentation around how it is all laid out, but we’re not really sure of all the implications and how everything is coupled together that may or may not prevent us from moving to the cloud.”
Also, Landy pointed out that databases scale vertically. And as a result, Landy said, IT professionals can learn from best-of-breed IT solutions to build a flexible infrastructure: “The best of breed for each of those data store applications and how we’re actually providing the infrastructure to build intelligent applications is really different for each and every one of us. We do think, though, that there are similarities when we look at this where we can actually take a typical use case for a typical industry that may have very similar compliance and security needs and we think we could create a blueprint.”
