Michael Smith, Chief Information Officer at Mylan Laboratories Inc., described the importance of the CIO to drive innovation and transformation at the 2013 Chief Information Officer Leadership Forum in New York on Nov. 12. During his presentation, “The Role of the CIO in Innovation and Transformation,” Smith stated that CIOs have taken on different roles in today’s corporate world, thanks in part to new technologies that are becoming available.
According to Smith, CIOs drive transformation now more than ever before. Because new technologies are being developed across the globe, Smith added, it is crucial for CIOs to understand how they can leverage digital tools to help their businesses expand. Smith noted that CIOs who understand how technology can transform a business can use various digital tools to their advantage: “One of the things that has made [new technologies] successful is that they are in constant transformation. Transformation is not just an event, it is not a one-time thing; it is constant and continuous transformation.”
Smith stated that culture is an important part of driving innovation and transformation within an organization. If CIOs constantly search for ways to innovate and transform their operations, and make them a part of an organization’s culture, these executives could help their businesses for years to come: “It starts first with culture. I believe that culture and fostering the right culture starts with us as CIOs. It is the most important thing that we do. I look at culture as the ground in which we plant the seeds for what we want to accomplish. That ground is either going to grow and flourish or it’s going to starve it and die and never go anywhere.”
