Matteo Colombo, Principal, Information Services, KPMG, discussed digital transformation and its impact on today’s organizations in his presentation to Argyle’s CIO membership at the 2017 Chief Information Officer Leadership Forum: Data Strategy & Innovation in Chicago on Feb. 28. In his presentation, “Driving Digital Transformation with the Cloud,” Colombo described how organizations can use the cloud to promote digital transformation day after day.
According to Colombo, the cloud empowers digital transformation like never before. He stated the cloud enables employees across an organization to access information quickly and efficiently. In addition, Colombo noted the cloud allows workers to analyze data and gain insights they can use to help an organization reach new heights.
Ultimately, an effective cloud strategy is paramount for organizations that want to store and manage data in the cloud. Colombo said this plan should focus on the following areas:
How an organization prioritizes security may dictate the immediate and long-term success of its cloud strategy.
If an organization leverages reliable cloud storage solutions, it will be able to provide its employees with advanced data security. This organization also will be able to safeguard its sensitive data effectively and maintain compliance with various regulations.
“We make sure that the data we move to the cloud … is actually secure and compliant,” Colombo noted.
Also, an organization that leverages a secure cloud solution can drive digital transformation. This organization may be better equipped than its rivals to empower its employees with a wealth of data from any location, at any time. As a result, employees may be able to analyze data and use this information to implement organizational enhancements without delay.
“Using data analytics and deciphering data analytics really helped us on our [cloud digital transformation] journey,” Colombo said.
Not all cloud technologies are created equal, and an organization must deploy a cloud solution that can help it achieve its goals.

For example, Colombo said KPMG needed cloud technology that would enable workers around the globe to access information quickly and securely. KPMG deployed a cloud solution that supported the company’s mission, Colombo indicated, and likely will enjoy the benefits of this solution for years to come.
“We wanted to have technology that was global. … We really need to have [cloud] capabilities everywhere we go,” Colombo pointed out.
Colombo said an organization should consider how it currently stores data before it implements a cloud solution as well.
At KPMG, the business recognized that it would not be able to move all of its sensitive information into the cloud instantly. Therefore, the company used a hybrid data management solution, which helped the business streamline its transition into the cloud.
“It was very important for us to have a hybrid architecture because we were not going to be able to move everything to the cloud in one step,” Colombo stated.
Organizations must be able to gather assorted data in the cloud and analyze this information at any time. That way, organizations can gain the intelligence needed to make informed decisions.
Moreover, organizations should deploy cloud solutions that can be used in conjunction with new, evolving technologies. These cloud solutions will make it easy for managers to optimize the value of data and obtain the intelligence necessary to drive innovation.
“Whether it is voice, vision or knowledge, the ability to integrate those different services into a [cloud] platform is key,” Colombo said. “Think about embedding those capabilities into the application layer that you build on top of your platform.”

If an organization maintains an agile data analysis process, it may be able to assess large collections of data with ease. On the other hand, an organization that lacks agility may struggle to uncover actionable insights within large data sets.
“We needed [a data analysis process] that worked in an agile fashion,” Colombo stated.
A cloud solution should drive agility, and for good reason. With this cloud solution in place, an organization should have no trouble accessing data and transforming this information into meaningful insights.
Cloud services should empower organizations to consume data. By doing so, these services can help organizations discover innovative ways to foster collaboration and drive meaningful business improvements.
“When you consume the information, you don’t need to worry about whether there’s a data warehouse or data lake … you just consume the data,” Colombo pointed out.
Although the cloud can make a world of difference for organizations of all sizes, understanding how to use cloud solutions properly is essential. Organizations that allocate the necessary time and resources to examine their data needs can implement cloud solutions that support their day-to-day operations.
