Edward Marx, Chief Information Officer and Senior Vice President at Texas Health Resources, explained why today’s CIOs need to look beyond technology within their organizations during his presentation at the 2015 Chief Information Officer Leadership Forum in Dallas on March 11. In his presentation, “Delighting Customers with Information Technology,” Marx noted that combining technology with customer service and leadership can help an organization thrive for years to come.
According to Marx, many CIOs focus exclusively on technology. However, Marx pointed out that today’s CIOs must focus on “behind-the-scenes” IT, including infrastructure, hardware and other components. He also said technology alone will not help an organization bolster its operations: “Oftentimes, we as CIOs get so focused on the technology, but it’s not about the technology. You could take average technology, but with customer service and leadership you can do exponentially greater things than you could if you had the most unlimited budget possible when it comes to technology itself.”
In addition, Marx noted that CIOs are becoming increasingly valuable in today’s organizations. He added that CIOs are IT leaders and must act accordingly. If CIOs focus on finding ways to transform their operations, Marx said, they ultimately can help their organizations become more efficient: “It all starts with you. It doesn’t matter how good your theory is, if you don’t live it, if you don’t preach it, if you don’t practice it, if people don’t see it in you it’s not going to happen.”
