Keith Hadley, Practice Leader of Employment Branding at CareerBuilder, shared his thoughts on the importance of big data during a Thought Leadership Spotlight Presented by CareerBuilder at the 2013 Human Capital Leadership Forum in New York on Oct. 2. During his presentation, “Why the Big Deal Around Big Data,” Hadley emphasized that big data includes variety, volume and velocity, which make it valuable to organizations of all sizes.
According to Hadley, big data plays a key role in many organizations’ success. Because big data can be used to evaluate a number of everyday processes and procedures, Hadley added, it can transform an organization: “It’s not just about the data. It’s turning that data into information and the information into knowledge and then that knowledge into understanding and gaining wisdom.” Big data also provides long-lasting value, Hadley noted, because it helps organizations complete various HR tasks quickly and efficiently.
For HR professionals, finding top talent remains a major challenge in today’s job market, Hadley said. However, he acknowledged that big data enables organizations to make the best hiring choices consistently. By using a vast array of data to learn about applicants, Hadley said, organizations can recruit and train top talent that is likely to stay with them for years to come: “What schools are kicking out those graduates?…How do our salaries compete? If we understand where we are on the relative scale, we know how competitive we can be for talent. How does [an organization] compete with other [organizations in] major cities where we might be trying to source this talent?” With big data, Hadley said, organizations can become more productive and efficient by finding answers to the big questions that affect their everyday operations.
