Lynn Jolliffe, Executive Vice President of Human Resources at Ingram Micro, described how her organization is able to develop and retain leaders during her presentation at the 2014 Human Capital Leadership Forum in Los Angeles on Sept. 30. In her presentation, “Orderly Chaos or Mass Confusion?,” Jolliffe noted accountability and flexibility are vital for an organization to thrive in today’s global marketplace.
According to Jolliffe, an organization that has an effective leadership structure can perform faster than its rivals. In addition, Jolliffe pointed out empowering managers can help them become better decision-makers and ensure an organization can succeed: “If we wanted to have the better decision-making, we were going to have to make sure that our managers were empowering people, helping them learn how to make better decisions, which means the more people you have working for you the less time you can get into the minutia on absolutely everything. You have to get good people in and be able to trust them to move forward with the work that they are doing. You can’t get to the enhanced accountability without that.”
Engagement also is important for an organization to attract and retain talented employees, Jolliffe said. If an organization devotes the necessary time and resources to boost its employee engagement levels, Jolliffe said, it can thrive: “Our engagement went down two points. We were actually pleased because we thought it might go down more than that. We are working on what do we do to bring the engagement level back up and surpass it and how are we going to focus on some of these areas? That’s our road to success.”
