Joe Wegener, Vice President of Human Resources at Core-Mark Holding Company, discussed the importance of core strategies and infrastructure to develop senior leaders during his presentation at the 2014 Human Capital Leadership Forum in Los Angeles on Sept. 30. In his presentation, “Developing Senior Leaders in a 125-Year-Old Company,” Wegener pointed out creating a work environment that fosters education is critical for an organization to develop senior leaders.
According to Wegener, an organization that’s prepared for growth and change can effectively respond to marketplace demands. If an organization wants to develop senior leaders, Wegener said, it needs to focus on its people and develop the right infrastructure to foster growth. In addition, Wegener noted strategy is vital for organizations of all sizes: “We have to have a strategy. We have to be strategically agile. If we’re not agile, we will not be able to adapt to changes that are happening in the marketplace.”
Wegener also stated an organization needs innovators to stay ahead of its rivals. Creating new habits and identifying factors that make individuals successful, Wegener pointed out, enables an organization to expand rapidly. An organization needs to give its employees the necessary tools to grow, Wegener added, to ensure it can consistently develop leaders who can lead the organization both now and in the future: “We had to take a look at what does success look like? We asked ourselves that. That’s why we had the division presidents come in and talk to us. How did they envision success in their organization? How do we envision success in a learning organization? We envisioned success as that it becomes part of the normal day-to-day activity.”
