Denise Dettingmeijer, Chief Financial Officer, North America at Randstad, shared her thoughts on the finance function and its role in today’s organizations during a Fireside Chat with Alan Rouse, Global Financial Processes and Controls Director at Mars, and Argyle’s CFO membership at the 2015 Chief Financial Officer Leadership Forum in Chicago on Nov. 18. In the discussion, Dettingmeijer explored ways to align the finance function with other roles in an organization.
According to Dettingmeijer, she worked with Randstad to examine ways to show finance could work with other departments. Ultimately, she determined a logo in the shape of a house was ideal because it showed how finance connected with other groups. By creating this logo, Dettingmeijer noted she was able to show that each department’s goals were aligned with one another as well: “We’re after growth. We’re after sustainability of our business, of finding people jobs, shaping the world of work. The end goals are completely aligned. It’s how we get there within our world and then connecting with each other that we’ve done.”
Examining a finance department’s internal operations as well as how it connects with other departments is essential, Dettingmeijer said. Today’s CFO also must remain flexible and be unafraid to step outside of his or her comfort zone, she added. By doing so, Dettingmeijer said a CFO can become an effective business leader: “If you approach always with the CFO traditional hat on it doesn’t work. You have to be the business leader with the great idea.”
