Doug Herron, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Safelite AutoGlass, discussed the impact of brand, culture and a company’s employees on a business’ long-term success during his presentation at the 2014 Chief Financial Officer Leadership Forum in New York on May 13. According to Herron, every business must decide where to focus their disciplines and their core values.
Herron noted an organization needs to focus on its people to succeed. He also acknowledged a company’s employees play important roles, and a business must find ways to attract and retain top talent consistently: “We believe that you have to take care of your people first and foremost, if you want them to take care of your customers. If you want to become the preferred service provider in any industry, you must first become a preferred place to work.”
In addition, Herron said a company needs to ensure that its employees understand its mission. Herron stated businesses need to understand their full potential and should consider myriad questions so they can succeed for years to come: “The critical point for any company is to ask the question and make sure that everything you do is aligned with your answer to that question. What separate great companies from good ones are the focus and the detailed business processes that you bring to bear on the how you go about your operations? Companies that never answer these questions, I would say often sub optimize what their business is capable of.”
